Understanding ACA Health Insurance Plans
5 min read · Bobby Brock Life & Health
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplace offers health insurance to individuals and families who don't get coverage through an employer. Here's what you need to know to make a smart choice.
The Metal Tiers Explained
ACA plans are organized into four "metal" tiers — Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. The tier describes how costs are split between you and the insurance company, not the quality of care.
- Bronze: Lowest monthly premium, highest out-of-pocket costs. Best if you're generally healthy and want protection against catastrophic events.
- Silver: Mid-range premiums and cost-sharing. The only tier eligible for Cost-Sharing Reductions (CSRs) if your income qualifies.
- Gold: Higher premiums, lower out-of-pocket costs. Good if you use healthcare regularly.
- Platinum: Highest premiums, lowest cost-sharing. Best for people with significant ongoing medical needs.
Premium Tax Credits
If your household income falls between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level — and in some cases above that — you may qualify for a Premium Tax Credit (PTC) that reduces your monthly premium. These credits are available on all metal tiers.
The credit is calculated based on a benchmark Silver plan in your area. You can apply the credit to any metal tier — applying it to a Bronze plan can sometimes result in a $0 or very low monthly premium.
An independent broker can run the numbers for your specific income and household size to show you exactly what you'd qualify for.
Open Enrollment & Special Enrollment Periods
ACA plans are available during the annual Open Enrollment Period, which typically runs from November 1 through January 15 in most states. Outside of that window, you can only enroll if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) triggered by a life event.
Open Enrollment & Special Enrollment Periods
- Losing job-based coverage
- Getting married or divorced
- Having or adopting a child
- Moving to a new coverage area
- Turning 26 and aging off a parent's plan
Essential Health Benefits
All ACA-compliant plans must cover ten essential health benefits, including emergency services, hospitalization, prescription drugs, mental health services, maternity care, and preventive care at no cost to you.
Working With an Independent Broker
An independent broker like Bobby Brock can compare plans across multiple carriers at no cost to you — broker fees are paid by the insurance company, not the policyholder. Bobby helps you weigh premiums, deductibles, networks, and drug formularies so you're not guessing.
